Samizu  Matsuki, an award winning Japanese artist who retired to the Penobscot Bay region of Maine in 1993, passed away   in her Rockland home on September 4, 2018 . A classical realist oil painter,  Samizu  played a brief yet important role in re-affirming the legitimacy of realistic oil painting as High Art in the  New York City  painting scene of the  early 1970s drawing huge crowds to her entries at several national and international competitions.   Samizu 's significance is in her returning the techniques of Western  Classical Realism painting , as filtered through Japanese art schools since the 19th century, back to the West.  She was born March 16, 1936  in the town of Uryu in Hokkaido,Japan, to educators Masue and Satoru Matsuki.  Samizu  was introduced early to western culture by her parents . Samizu Matsuki is an incredible and incredibly quiet and non assuming Japanese artist who played a pivotal though nearly invisible role in relegitimizing classical realism as an oil painting genre in New York City in the late 1960's and 1970s. Samizu's mother Masue Matsuki was a "Modern Girl" of 1920's interwar Japan; her father the educator Satoru Matsuki was also part of t he cultural revolution among young Japanese of that era, whose adoption of western clothing, culture and mass consumerism both galvanaized and alarmed Japanese society of the time. I am disappointed with practice of American democracy, as expressed through the mainstream media. Nowadays I hear more often than ever, an overall majority praising of conservatism on the mass media. My disappointment is that until certain solution is adopted, under democracy, criticism is fine, but once a solution is adopted, the majority of people are suposed to support it . As far as the economy is concerned the first thing any nation should do is build up the bottom part of its economy. This was proposed by Karl Marx and by Roosevelt. Listening to a recent speaker on the declared "need" to not depart from Iraq, I realized that not only was he wrong about the "moral" need for America to stay there (to prevent civil war, suppposedly), but his line of thinking presupposes that the moral high ground is for America to leave Iraq in triumph, or not at all. It takes a profound morality to accept defeat, or failure of occupation, and to depart, and offer whatever reparations are needed. The speaker instead spoke of it being a good thing that America occupy and oppress Iraq until such time as _WE_ decide we like their state of being. But like the British leaving America in defeat in the 1770s, the Japanese leaving China in defeat in WW2, the French leaving Algeria in defeat in the 1950s, America will survive the humuliation and move on.
