'70's realism painting pioneer Samizu Matsuki paints new Jimi Hendrix portraits

Image
Samizu Matsuki is an incredible and incredibly quiet and non assuming Japanese artist who played a pivotal though nearly invisible role in relegitimizing classical realism as an oil painting genre in New York City in the late 1960's and 1970s. Samizu's mother Masue Matsuki was a "Modern Girl" of 1920's interwar Japan; her father the educator Satoru Matsuki was also part of t he cultural revolution among young Japanese of that era, whose adoption of western clothing, culture and mass consumerism both galvanaized and alarmed Japanese society of the time. So too was her art teacher Setsuko Migishi at the Women's College of Fine Arts a Modern Girl; she who immersed her pupil in the western classical art tradition. For indeed, Samizu Matsuki, in her magically evocative realistic oil paintings,  can be considered as one of the culminating flowers of the Modern Girl philosophy, brought back,  to the American cultural capital of the 1960s and 70's: New Yor...

Step carefully on Afghan/Pakistan policies, Mr President!

The American position in the Far East is precarious and President Obama needs to tread carefully. Bring American troops home away from there, and away from Iraq. But in a way that does not lead to a humiliating rout, please

Sinister aspect of American democracy

I am disappointed with practice of American democracy, as expressed through the mainstream media. Nowadays I hear more often than ever, an overall majority praising of conservatism on the mass media. The conservatism which caused the economic catastrophe is now noble. And demands the prevention of the stimulus package. My disappointment is that until certain solution is adopted, under democracy, criticism is fine, but once a solution is adopted, the majority of people are suposed to support it . Instead they are acting out like suddenly this democratic tendency which created stim package is a socialist movement - bad S-word in America. Despite dire circumstance, the only thing they call for is tax relief, for the rich - a disaster. It is the sinister aspect of American democracy My belief is that success of the American policy of today is vital whether the present system will survive or not. Suddenly, however, the public radio news people keep promoting conservative points of ...

Obama's economic stimulus

Right now in the senate. Seems like its opposition is getting given too much weight by a bored and moronic media. Suddenly McCain rears his head, demanding the money giveaway be chipped down. Nothing for the rabble!

The price of Art - more hi-end works to be donated to museums and galleries.

Given the economy, many of the superpricey paintings that have traded relentlessly upward may run into an iron wall of cold economic equations that sends their value plumeting. Not all but which? Which paintings will stand out as the jewels of the twentieth century? For the twentieth century's art history from 1900 to 1999 is only now becoming distant enough in time to start assessing. But how? By doing as other centuries may have done: all the smart people in the art field come together and set a standards, make value judgements from the perspective of an art professional on the art of the 20th century. Each category needs to be judged: nonrealist and realist genres both: abstractionism, expressionism, abstract expressionism, minimalism, bauhjau russian constructionism, Italian futurism. Same for Classic Realismm Photo realismm and surrealism and primitivism. A comprehensive standard for each category should be set. Then we will see what was truly valuable in the 20th...
